Photon Server review
A customizable Windows-based multiplayer backend for teams hosting Photon infrastructure themselves.

Photon Server is an on-premises real-time socket server and multiplayer game development framework for teams building and hosting their own game backend. It is designed for developers who need control over server applications, room management, matchmaking, real-time data transfer, and deployment rather than using Photon Cloud. The server runs on Windows and supports .NET/C# development alongside cross-platform game clients.
Its strongest fit is custom multiplayer infrastructure. Photon Server provides load balancing across master and game servers, rooms, events, properties, lobbies, and matchmaking. Multiple transport choices—reliable UDP, TCP, HTTP, WebSocket, and Secure WebSocket—support different connection requirements. Teams can also create custom server applications and plugins, while interest groups allow selective event delivery. This combination gives developers a broad base for building game-specific networking behavior within a client-server model.
Pricing is aimed at teams with a defined infrastructure budget. The Server Monitored plan costs $500 per server per month and includes a single-node setup with 500 CCU online. Server Unlimited costs $1,500 per month, includes unlimited servers, 5,000 CCU, and unlimited CCU online. Server Unmonitored offers offline capability, hardware-ID locking, and time-limited access through a custom offer. Photon Server requires a valid license and has no free plan, so it suits teams prepared to manage self-hosted infrastructure. Teams wanting managed hosting or a lower-cost entry point should consider a different approach, while teams needing customizable Photon server applications should choose Photon Server.
