Photon Engine is an umbrella family of multiplayer networking and backend services from Exit Games. It is designed for game developers ranging from indie teams to AAA studios, with products including Fusion, Quantum, Realtime, Voice, Chat, and PUN. The feature set covers real-time multiplayer networking, state synchronization, rooms and lobbies, matchmaking, player authentication, cloud persistence, voice, text communication, and server logic across web, desktop, mobile, and API environments.

Pricing spans development access, fixed CCU tiers, usage-based scaling, and enterprise deployment. Development Only supports 20 connected users at the same time and 60 GB of traffic per month. The For Launch plan supports 100 connected users, one app per customer, and games only. The 100 CCU plan costs $95 one-time annually and has no recurring fees. Monthly tiers cost $125 for 500 CCU, $250 for 1,000 CCU, and $500 for 2,000 CCU, with included traffic and CCU burst. Premium Cloud uses usage-based CCU auto-scaling at $0.5 per CCU per month, up to 50,000 CCU. Enterprise Cloud adds dedicated managed environments, dedicated servers, server-authoritative plug-ins, SLA, and priority operations support.

Photon’s ecosystem fit is a central strength. Integrations include Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, C#/.NET, C++, JavaScript, and native platforms. Photon Cloud handles hosting, operations, regional infrastructure, and scaling, while enterprise cloud environments and Photon Server options support dedicated or self-managed infrastructure. Reconnectable rooms support synchronous and asynchronous gameplay, and server plugins extend authoritative logic. Choose Photon Engine for cross-platform multiplayer that needs networking, matchmaking, identity, persistence, or communications in one product family. Teams seeking a wider LiveOps focus should consider an alternative.
