Our verdict on PhDportal

PhDportal is a web-based search and comparison platform for students exploring doctoral study internationally. Its focus is English-taught PhD programmes from universities worldwide, with search filters covering subject, country, tuition fees, duration, study format, language requirements and university rankings. Students can review university admission requirements, compare shortlisted options, save programmes to a wishlist and connect directly with universities to apply. The platform is operated by Studyportals B.V. and is free for students.

The strongest part of PhDportal is its structured discovery workflow. Search filters help narrow a broad international market, while programme pages bring together tuition fees, rankings, location, study format and admission information. The platform also includes scholarships and PhD funding opportunities, making it useful for applicants who need to consider affordability alongside academic fit. PhDportal states that programme information is verified against official university sources, which gives its directory a clear research-oriented role before applicants move to university websites or direct contact.

Its scope is also its main boundary. Students seeking English-taught doctoral study across countries should find the international search, comparisons and wishlist useful, but applicants looking for programmes in other teaching languages will need a different starting point. PhDportal is best suited to early and mid-stage research: identifying options, comparing requirements and locating possible funding. Applicants should still assess each university’s current requirements and application process directly. Choose PhDportal for broad, funded-programme discovery on the web; choose an alternative if your search depends on non-English-taught programmes or a mobile app.
