PermissionManager review
A free, open-source choice for straightforward, YAML-based server permissions.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
PermissionManager is an open-source Minecraft server plugin for administrators who need direct control over player permission nodes and configured groups. It runs on self-hosted Paper and Folia servers, with commands for granting permissions through `/perm give`, removing them through `/perm remove`, and reloading configuration with `/perm reload`. Users and groups are stored in YAML files, keeping the management model centered on server configuration rather than a web interface or network-wide service.
Its strongest fit is a small or straightforward server setup where basic permission administration matters more than an extensive permissions ecosystem. Administrators can configure allowed and denied permissions, assign users to groups, and have permissions applied when players join or change worlds. The published feature set also includes PlaceholderAPI integration, while the Folia-compatible plugin declaration broadens its fit across supported server platforms. YAML storage can suit operators who prefer file-based configuration and self-hosted control.
PermissionManager is less suitable for larger or more complex deployments. Group inheritance is not included, so administrators cannot rely on a hierarchy of permissions between groups. Temporary permissions, network support, and a web editor are also outside its scope, making it a weaker choice for timed access, multi-server administration, or browser-based workflows. Choose it when a free plugin with essential commands, groups, YAML storage, and Paper/Folia compatibility covers the requirement; choose another permissions solution when inherited groups, temporary access, network-wide management, or web administration are central.
