Our verdict on OpenImageIO
OpenImageIO is a free, open-source library and command-line toolkit for reading, writing, and processing images. It is aimed primarily at VFX studios and developers building renderers, compositors, viewers, and other production-pipeline software. Windows, macOS, Linux, and API access are listed platforms; the project is self-hosted rather than a hosted conversion service. It suits technical teams that need image I/O inside their own software or workflow, not people looking for a simple desktop converter.
Its format support and processing tools are the central draw. Format plugins handle image types including TIFF, JPEG, OpenEXR, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIF/HEIC/AVIF, and RAW camera formats. The format-agnostic ImageInput and ImageOutput APIs provide a route to read and write images, while Python bindings expose major APIs. For command-line work, oiiotool supports format conversion and processing, and iconvert converts formats, data types, and metadata. ImageBuf and ImageBufAlgo provide storage and processing functions; ImageCache is for accessing large image collections, and TextureSystem offers filtered MIP-map lookups. This breadth makes the project relevant beyond one-off conversion, particularly in VFX and animation pipelines.
The trade-off is that OpenImageIO is a buildable library and toolkit, not a ready-to-use desktop or web app. Teams should expect to work with APIs, plugins, or command-line utilities and to host the software themselves. The original code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, and community support is the listed channel. That profile is a fit for developers and technical imaging teams integrating conversion into production systems; occasional users who want a graphical, hosted converter should choose a different kind of product.
