OpenDocMan is a free, open-source document management system for organizations that need controlled files, structured metadata, and basic document workflows. It runs in a web browser and supports self-hosted deployments on a web server with PHP and MySQL or MariaDB. Small teams managing departmental documents, internal records, and files with defined review or expiration requirements should find its scope aligned with those needs. Browser-based uploads avoid FTP, while custom properties, departments, categories, and file-level permissions provide a structured way to organize access.

The Community edition is on-premises and self-installed, with unlimited users, file locking, and custom metadata. The Enterprise edition is also on-premises and includes automated installation, unlimited users, file locking, custom metadata, and easy updates. According to the vendor's pricing page, Enterprise uses contact-for-quote pricing. Its core capabilities cover check-in/check-out, revision history, approve/reject review workflows, expiration settings, and searches across metadata, author, department, category, filename, and comments. These features make the product a practical fit when document control matters more than a broad ecosystem.

OpenDocMan's narrow focus is also its main boundary. The product covers uploads, organization, revisions, review, expiration, search, and granular access controls, but it does not provide integrations, OCR, or audit logs. That makes it better suited to small teams that can manage a self-hosted PHP and MySQL or MariaDB installation and primarily need foundational document management. Teams seeking connected workflows, document text recognition, native mobile access, or audit-focused oversight should choose a different product.
