OpenAL Soft review
A focused, free audio API for developers who need spatial playback without a full authoring suite.

OpenAL Soft is a cross-platform, LGPL-licensed implementation of the OpenAL 3D audio API. It is designed for developers integrating low-level spatial audio into games and other applications, particularly teams building custom engines or applications on Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android. The project focuses on playback and audio-device capabilities rather than providing a complete production environment for authoring, dialogue, localization, or adaptive music.
Its feature set covers core spatial playback needs in a single focused API. Developers can work with 3D positional audio, distance attenuation, Doppler shift, directional emitters, HRTF-based output, and multichannel audio buffers. EFX adds air absorption, occlusion, and environmental reverb, while audio asset streaming supports longer or continuously delivered content. Audio capture, configurable audio backends, and per-user or system-wide settings extend its usefulness across different application and device configurations. The combination is well suited to projects that need runtime spatial behavior without adopting a broader audio production suite.
The main trade-off is scope. OpenAL Soft is delivered as source code and built with CMake, so it fits teams comfortable integrating an API and managing the surrounding audio workflow. It does not replace an authoring, dialogue-management, localization, or adaptive-music system. Choose it when open-source licensing, cross-platform runtime support, and spatial playback are the priorities. Teams seeking visual content workflows, dialogue production tools, localization management, or a wider game-audio pipeline should choose a more comprehensive middleware product instead.
