OpenAI Text-to-Speech review
A flexible multilingual TTS API with strong style controls and usage-based pricing.

OpenAI Text-to-Speech converts written text into spoken audio through an API. It is designed for developers building narration, voice interfaces, accessibility tools, and other software that needs programmatic speech generation. Applications can use 13 built-in voices or approved custom voices created with consent recordings and matching samples. The service supports 57 input languages, although its voices are currently optimized for English.
Pricing is usage-based rather than subscription-based. GPT-4o Mini TTS costs $12 per 1M audio tokens and allows a maximum input of 2,000 tokens. TTS-1 costs $15 per 1M characters and is optimized for speed, while TTS-1 HD costs $30 per 1M characters as a higher-quality alternative. Each of the latter two plans provides speech generation through the Audio API. The structure suits applications that can monitor consumption, but there is no free plan and the billing units differ between models.
The strongest feature set is control over delivery. Developers can adjust accent, emotional range, intonation, speed, tone, and whispering, then stream audio in real time or export MP3, Opus, AAC, FLAC, WAV, or PCM. The 4,096-character request limit makes the API a better fit for conversational responses, interface prompts, and segmented narration than for submitting long-form text in one request. Choose it when multilingual generation, programmable style control, and format flexibility matter. Consider an alternative if you need a no-code interface, a free starting tier, or long single-request inputs.
