Our verdict on Open3D

Open3D is an open-source library for developers and researchers building software that processes 3D data. It supports point clouds, triangle meshes, RGB-D data, visualization, scene reconstruction, surface alignment, rendering, and 3D machine learning. The package runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, includes a standalone viewer, and provides Python and C++ APIs. Its supported inputs include Intel RealSense cameras, Azure Kinect, RGB-D image sequences, RealSense bag files, point-cloud files, and mesh files.

Its main strength is the breadth of programmable 3D processing tools. Developers can load, write, filter, downsample, and remove outliers from point clouds; import and export triangle meshes and multi-material models; and perform registration and surface alignment. RGB-D scene reconstruction from image sequences, surface reconstruction including Poisson reconstruction, 3D visualization, and physically based rendering cover substantial parts of a scanning pipeline. GPU acceleration and Open3D-ML integrations extend the library toward machine-learning workflows, with PyTorch and TensorFlow integrations also listed.

Open3D fits teams that want to assemble a scanning workflow around code, supported cameras, and their own application requirements. It is particularly suitable when Python or C++ access, real-time capture, file-format coverage, and control over reconstruction steps matter more than a packaged user interface. The trade-off is that it is a developer library rather than a conventional hosted 3D-scanning application, so teams seeking a turnkey workflow should consider a more application-focused option. Developers can choose it when open-source access and cross-platform support are priorities, while teams without development resources may find its programmable approach less suitable.
