Our verdict on OgStar Reading
OgStar Reading is a multisensory structured-literacy app for developing and struggling readers, including children with dyslexia and English language learners. Its activities cover systematic and synthetic phonics, phonological awareness, sight words, phonetically controlled reading, spelling, tracing, writing, pronunciation support, and mini-games. Versions span preschool through grade 8, making it suited to children who need repeated reading and writing practice within a structured literacy framework.
The pricing structure gives families and schools several entry points. OgStar Reading Explore is a free iPad app for exploring literacy activities. OgStar Reading Early provides a 35-lesson literacy game for grades pre-K through 3, while OgStar Reading Complete provides 106 lessons for grades pre-K through 8. The Annual Student License - Chrome costs $50 per student per year for home or school use. The Annual School License Per Student - Chrome costs $40 per student per year for schools and districts, with volume discounts available for 1,000 or more licenses.
Its strongest distinction is the combination of literacy instruction and feedback across multiple modes. Speech-recognition feedback, handwriting-recognition feedback, syllable and sentence tracing, rewards, and progress data extend the experience beyond simple phonics drills. Parents, teachers, and schools can view progress data, while Chrome and iPad support provide two access routes. OgStar Reading is a strong fit for children needing focused multisensory literacy practice and for adults who want shared progress information. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a broad general-learning app rather than a dedicated reading and writing tool.
