Our verdict on OB-E

OB-E is GForce Software’s virtual instrument based on the Oberheim 8-Voice architecture. It is aimed at musicians seeking expressive, Oberheim-style polyphonic synthesis, with eight independent SEM modules for shaping voices and a range of keyboard modes. It runs as a standalone application or as a DAW plugin on macOS and Windows, making it relevant both to studio workflows and standalone playing. The instrument’s focus is synthesis rather than a broad collection of instrument types, so buyers looking for varied sound sources may prefer a wider virtual-instrument suite.

The voice architecture is the central draw: OB-E combines eight SEM modules with polyphonic, monophonic, mono-legato, unison and split modes. A built-in 8-step sequencer, stereo delay and reverb extend the sound-design toolkit, while Drum Mode offers 10 drum-kit presets. The patch librarian supports categorization and tagging, and the factory library contains more than 700 patches. Polyphonic aftertouch and MPE support add expressive control options for compatible setups. This makes OB-E a fit for players who value voice interaction and detailed patch exploration; its narrower SEM-based focus is less suited to buyers prioritizing broad instrument coverage.

OB-E is a paid product with a 7-day trial; the demo is limited to 6 hours of use or 7 days, whichever is longer. The OB-E license includes OB-EZ as well. Its listed formats include VST, VST3, AudioUnit and AAX, alongside standalone operation, and the product supports macOS and Windows. That gives it a choice of host formats while retaining a standalone option. Choose OB-E if its distinctive multi-SEM design, patch library and MPE support match your music-making needs; consider an alternative if free access or a wider range of instrument types matters more.
