Our verdict on Numbas
Numbas is an open-source online assessment system developed by Newcastle University for mathematics and other numerate subjects. Educators create questions and exams in a graphical editor, using randomized variables, automatic marking, immediate feedback, adaptive marking, and diagnostic activities. Mathematical expression and number-entry question types support subject-specific assessment, while students complete exams in a browser or through supported delivery options. It is suited to schools, universities, and institutions that need configurable mathematical exams rather than a general-purpose assessment tool.
Its strongest fit is the combination of mathematical depth and learning-environment compatibility. Interactive diagrams can use GeoGebra and JSXGraph integrations, and exams can be delivered through Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Brightspace, SCORM 2004, and LTI. Offline-capable browser delivery adds flexibility where continuous connectivity is not suitable. Institutions can use Newcastle University's hosted editor or install the editor and LTI provider on infrastructure they control, giving teams a choice between hosted delivery and greater control over their own environment.
Numbas is less suitable when assessment requires broad subject coverage, integrated proctoring, or identity verification. Its lockdown app restricts access to exam internals, but it does not prevent use of other applications or websites, so it should not be treated as a complete proctoring system. The product makes the most sense for institutions that value open-source software, randomized mathematical questions, diagnostics, and integration with existing learning environments. Organizations needing stronger exam surveillance or a wider range of non-numerate assessment workflows should choose a platform built around those requirements instead.
