Nextcloud Talk is an open-source communication application for teams that want chat, calls and web conferencing within the Nextcloud ecosystem. It supports text chat, threaded conversations, private, group and public conversations, audio and video calls, screen sharing, webinars, guest access and file sharing. Organizations can deploy it on their own infrastructure or use a hosting provider, with clients for web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. It is especially suited to Nextcloud users and teams that prioritize control over deployment and data location.
The pricing structure includes a free plan and a Standard plan priced at €42 per user per year with annual billing. Standard is described as including Nextcloud Talk and secure online meetings, chat and web conferencing. The product’s ecosystem is a major consideration: it connects with Nextcloud Files, Calendar and Groupware, and supports interoperability with IRC, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, Mattermost, XMPP, Pexip and SIP providers. Federated chat and video calls extend communication across compatible deployments, while Nextcloud Translate supports translation workflows. AI-powered transcription, translation and summaries are also included among the available capabilities.
The main trade-off is operational scope. Self-hosted deployment gives organizations control, but it also makes infrastructure, administration and service configuration part of the decision. Larger calls may require the High Performance Backend, and teams connecting several external services may need additional coordination. Talk is a strong fit for organizations already invested in Nextcloud or seeking open-source, self-managed communication with broad collaboration features. Teams that prefer a fully managed chat product with minimal deployment responsibility should consider a hosted-first alternative instead.
