NetLogo review
A free, open-source desktop tool for agent-based research and simulation.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
NetLogo is a programmable modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena, designed primarily for agent-based modeling. Researchers and educators can define rules for mobile, patch, and link agents, then examine how individual behavior produces system-level patterns. Its model library and interface-building tools support creating interactive models, while visualization and plots help present their behavior. The software is free and open source under GPL, with desktop applications for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
For experimental work, BehaviorSpace supports multiple parallel model runs, and headless command-line batch operation provides another way to run models without the graphical interface. The System Dynamics Modeler offers a complementary approach alongside agent-based modeling, while discrete-event scheduling is available through the Time extension. NetLogo also supports 2D and 3D visualization, networked participatory simulations through HubNet, and controlling and extensions APIs. These capabilities make it suited to model exploration, repeated runs, and teaching or research activities that benefit from interactive simulation.
NetLogo is a focused choice rather than a general-purpose simulation suite: its stated design centers on agent-based modeling, and deployment is desktop rather than cloud. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. The published licensing information describes GPL open-source use and says commercial licenses are available by contacting the author. Researchers building agent-based models who want an open-source tool with model-run and visualization features are the clearest fit; teams that require cloud deployment or broader simulation-suite coverage should consider alternatives.
NetLogo pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Model mobile, patch, and link agents with configurable rules.
- Run repeated experiments with BehaviorSpace and headless batch runs.
- Explore models in 2D or 3D, with plots and a System Dynamics Modeler.
- Where it doesn't
- Desktop deployment does not provide cloud deployment.
- Its primary focus on agent-based modeling is narrower than general-purpose suites.
- Support relies on documentation and community channels.
