netcode.io is an open-source client/server networking protocol for multiplayer games. It is designed for game clients connecting to dedicated servers over UDP, with connection establishment, connect-token authorization, encrypted and signed packet exchange, client slot allocation, and capacity enforcement. Engine and language coverage includes C, C#, Go, Rust, Unity, Unreal Engine 4, and TypeScript, making it suited to teams that want a focused networking layer across several development environments.

Its strongest area is connection security and transport control. Connect tokens provide the authorization mechanism, while encrypted and signed packets help protect exchanges. The protocol also includes replay, malicious-packet, and amplification-attack protection, plus IPv4 and IPv6 support. Packet tagging and unreliable unordered UDP transport are included for applications that need low-level control. Clean disconnect handling and hard-disconnect timeouts add defined behavior around connection termination, while slot allocation and capacity enforcement help dedicated servers manage client admission.

netcode.io keeps its scope narrow. Matchmaking and backend authentication remain application responsibilities, so teams choosing it need to provide those surrounding services themselves. The project is open source under the BSD 3-Clause license and is self-hosted, with no paid tier structure described. Choose it when secure tokenized connections, dedicated-server networking, and UDP control are the priority. Teams seeking built-in matchmaking or a broader game-services middleware layer should look for a product that covers those responsibilities directly.

netcode.io pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Connect tokens support secure client/server authorization
    • Protects packets against replay, malicious-packet, and amplification attacks
    • Supports C, C#, Go, Rust, Unity, UE4, and TypeScript
  • Where it doesn't
    • Matchmaking remains an application responsibility
    • Backend authentication remains outside the protocol
    • Focused on low-level UDP transport rather than broader middleware
