NetAlertX monitors local networks to identify connected devices and track changes such as new arrivals, disconnections, and IP changes. It is aimed at homelab operators and IT teams who want visibility into LAN devices, with use cases also described for MSPs and distributed environments. The product is available as open-source software and supports self-hosted installation, including through Docker, Home Assistant, Unraid, or bare metal. It is a better fit for keeping an inventory and noticing device changes than for evaluating Wi-Fi security: its documented capabilities do not include security checks.

Its monitoring centers on device presence and status. A LAN visualization shows devices and their status, while event history and alerts help surface changes. Notifications can go through email, webhooks, MQTT, and other channels. NetAlertX can also import device information from DHCP servers, Pi-hole, and UniFi controllers, and it supports Home Assistant and Apprise integrations. Custom rules, automated workflows, plugins, and API and MCP access extend its use for people who want to connect network monitoring with other systems. These options make it relevant to self-hosters comfortable managing integrations and deployment choices.

NetAlertX is open source and has a free plan. Its published product details describe integrations, automation, and deployment options, but do not document security checks for Wi-Fi weaknesses. That distinction matters in this category: device discovery can help identify unfamiliar or changed devices, but it is not a substitute for a scanner that checks network security. Choose NetAlertX if tracking LAN assets and receiving change alerts are the priority; choose a security-focused alternative if you need documented checks for vulnerabilities or configuration weaknesses.

NetAlertX pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Discovers LAN devices and tracks presence, IP changes, and MAC addresses
    • Alerts on new, disconnected, or changed devices across multiple channels
    • Offers workflows, integrations, and API/MCP access for automation
  • Where it doesn't
    • Does not include documented Wi-Fi security checks
    • Requires a deployment such as Docker, Home Assistant, Unraid, or bare metal
    • Its focus is device discovery and change monitoring, not security assessment
