Nerfstudio review
A flexible research framework for reconstructing and exporting 3D scenes locally.

Nerfstudio is an open-source framework for creating, training, testing, viewing, and exporting NeRF and Gaussian-splatting models. It is aimed at researchers, developers, and technical teams working on 3D scene reconstruction and novel-view synthesis. Image and video dataset processing, command-line tools, a browser-based viewer, Python APIs, and geometry-export workflows support a technical, locally managed workflow rather than a hosted mobile scanning experience.
Its strongest advantage is the depth of its reconstruction pipeline. Nerfstudio supports NeRF and Gaussian-splatting training, real-time browser-based scene viewing, camera-path video rendering, point-cloud export, TSDF and Poisson mesh reconstruction, and textured mesh export. Training evaluation and benchmarking tools add structure for research workflows. The published integrations include Polycam, KIRI Engine, Record3D, Spectacular AI, Metashape, RealityCapture, OpenDroneMap, and Project Aria, while exports include PLY, OBJ, PNG, and JPEG.
Nerfstudio fits teams that want open-source control, Python access, modular components, and the ability to run the framework locally across web, Windows, Linux, API, and self-hosted environments. Linux is the recommended environment, while Windows is supported but less tested, and users manage their own compute setup. The trade-off is focus: Nerfstudio is built around neural scene reconstruction and novel-view synthesis, not measurement-led scanning. Choose it for experimentation, model training, evaluation, and export workflows; choose a more measurement-focused tool when dimensional analysis is central.
Nerfstudio pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports NeRF and Gaussian-splatting training with evaluation tools
- Exports point clouds, meshes, and textured meshes
- Offers Python APIs, browser viewing, and modular pipelines
- Where it doesn't
- Requires users to manage their own local compute environment
- Measurement tools are not included
- Linux is preferred; Windows support is less tested
