n64js is an open-source Nintendo 64 emulator written mostly in ES6 JavaScript. It runs in web browsers through a hosted GitHub Pages build and can also be built and served locally from its repository. The project is aimed at users who want to load Nintendo 64 ROMs in a browser without installing a traditional desktop emulator. It supports browser-based keyboard controller input, configurable controller bindings, high-level graphics emulation, and low-level audio emulation. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari are supported browsers, while Edge is untested.

Its strongest distinction is persistent save handling. n64js stores save data through localStorage and supports several Nintendo 64 save-device types: Mempack, EEPROM, SRAM, and FlashRAM. That makes it a practical fit for browser users who need progress to persist between sessions. The emulator also includes fullscreen and debugging interfaces, while WebGL is the listed renderer API. There is no paid tier to evaluate: the project is open source and has a free plan.

The trade-off is compatibility depth. The maintainers report that many games are playable, but graphical issues and incomplete compatibility remain. Save states are listed as a TODO, so users who depend on quick state snapshots will need another emulator. Choose n64js if browser access, open-source availability, configurable controls, and persistent save-device support matter most. Choose an alternative if you need broad compatibility, polished graphics across a wider range of games, or save states as a core part of the workflow.
