Our verdict on Mosaico
Mosaico is an open-source editor for designing responsive HTML emails. It is aimed at developers, template authors, designers, and email users who want visual control over email layouts without manually building every responsive detail. The editor combines content blocks, drag-and-drop image uploading, style controls, personalization, and HTML-based template editing. It can run through a hosted editor or as a self-hosted JavaScript application.
Its strongest area is the depth of its template-editing workflow. Responsive templates are designed for major email clients and devices, while image uploads can be resized automatically during drag-and-drop editing. Global undo and redo support iterative work, and style controls cover colors, fonts, text size, and buttons. Custom templates can be created with a template language, giving developers and template authors more control than a fixed collection of layouts. The result is a focused workspace for producing editable HTML email designs.
Deployment choice shapes the product's fit. Self-hosting through a local web server or application backend gives developers control over how the editor is deployed, but it also requires technical setup beyond simply opening a design tool. Mosaico is a strong choice for developers and teams that value open-source software, custom templates, responsive output, and control over deployment. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a broader email marketing system, built-in campaign operations, or a collaboration-centered workflow. Its narrow focus is useful when the main requirement is creating and editing email templates rather than managing the full lifecycle of email communications.
