Our verdict on Momentum

Momentum is a free sample and loop editing tool from Big Fish Audio for producers working inside a DAW or in a standalone application. It runs on the web, Windows, and macOS, with plugin support and standalone operation. The core workflow covers imported sample slicing, chopping, MIDI note assignment for individual slices, one-shot extraction, and construction-kit playback. It is aimed at beatmakers who want to turn loops into playable parts while keeping sample browsing and editing in one product.

The free plan provides sample slicing, 18 slice effects—including pitch, stutter, delay, and reverse—MIDI-triggered slice playback, one-shot extraction, and access to a loop browser filtered by instrument, genre, key, and tempo. Momentum Pro adds personal audio-library organization, MP3 support, individual sample purchases, and subscription points. Monthly and annual subscription options are available for Momentum Pro. The published product information also mentions a free trial. Momentum supports WAV and AIFF imports in its editing workflow, while MP3 support is associated with Pro.

Momentum’s strength is its focused combination of slicing, creative processing, kit-style playback, and sample organization rather than a broad sampler-mapping environment. Producers looking for quick loop manipulation, browser-based filtering, or a standalone tool for sorting and editing samples should find its feature set relevant. It is less suitable for workflows centered on verified sampler mapping or round-robin features. Choose Momentum for accessible sample slicing and library management across web, Windows, and macOS; choose another sampler when advanced mapping behavior is the priority.
