modDNS review
A privacy-oriented DNS filter with encrypted connections, profiles and detailed controls.

modDNS is an encrypted DNS filtering service from IVPN Limited for people who want configurable control over ads, trackers, malware domains and other unwanted destinations. It suits privacy-oriented users who need more than a basic blocklist, including households or individuals managing filtering across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, browsers, routers and firewalls. The service is open source and distributed through IVPN Plus and IVPN Pro Suite rather than as a standalone product.
Its strongest fit is the range of connection and management options. modDNS supports DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-QUIC, along with IVPN apps, web browsers, routers and firewalls, and Apple mobile configuration profiles. Separate DNS profiles allow filtering rules to be tailored to different contexts. Curated and community blocklists provide a starting point, while custom allowlists and denylists support more precise control. Optional DNS query logging includes configurable retention, and device-level visibility adds context to activity reports.
The main trade-off is access and scale. IVPN Plus includes modDNS, IVPN for five devices and Mailx, while IVPN Pro Suite includes modDNS, IVPN for ten devices, Mailx and Portmaster Pro. The five-device limit associated with IVPN Plus may be restrictive for larger device collections, and the service is not offered as a standalone plan. Buyers who want encrypted DNS, configurable profiles and exportable analytics should consider modDNS; those seeking a separate filtering subscription or broader device coverage should look elsewhere. The vendor describes modDNS as beta and under active development.
