Our verdict on Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne is a free, open-source flash-card program for individual learners who want review timing to respond to how well they remember each card. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with an Android client for offline reviews and synchronization. The project also describes the software as part of research into long-term memory. It suits self-directed study more than classroom administration: shared decks are supported, but educator tools are not part of its listed capabilities.

Cards can contain images, audio, and video, and Mnemosyne can create linked recognition and production cards. Tags and card sets help organize and select material, while statistics include retention and the review schedule. Imports from Anki, SuperMemo, CueCard, and text formats can help learners bring existing material into the program. Plugins and a scripting API allow extensions; Google Translate and Google Text-to-Speech are listed integrations. These features make it a broad personal study system rather than a narrowly focused flash-card app.

The desktop applications, Android client, and bidirectional synchronization support study across devices, including offline reviews on Android. Browser-based reviewing works through a web server hosted on a desktop, so it is less direct than using a standalone web service. The project says the software can be used offline without sending research data, and documentation is the listed support channel. Choose Mnemosyne if you want free software with import options, media cards, and configurable extensions; look elsewhere if your priority is educator tooling or browser access without a desktop-hosted server.
