MITK is a free, open-source medical imaging application and development framework from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Its Workbench supports visualization, segmentation, and registration of CT, MRI, PET, and other DICOM data. Researchers who need manual or semi-automatic segmentation of anatomical or pathological structures are the clearest fit; it also offers extensibility for developers building medical imaging software.

The segmentation plugin combines multilabel workflows with 2D and 3D tools, post-processing utilities, and batch segmentation task lists. That makes MITK relevant for projects involving repeated segmentation work or varied structures, rather than a narrowly focused single-purpose editor. Its described AI features should not be read as proof of model training: semantic, instance, or video segmentation capabilities, model training, and supported ML frameworks are not verified. MITK is not certified for patient care, so it should not be treated as a clinical-care system.

MITK runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and includes a REST API for programmatic control and data operations. Developers can extend the Workbench with C++ libraries and a plugin system, giving technical teams options beyond the desktop workflows. The available support channel is documentation. Choose MITK if open-source medical imaging, manual segmentation, and developer extensibility align with your research or engineering work; look elsewhere if you require verified AI model training, a validated patient-care product, or support beyond documentation.

    • Batch task lists, post-processing, and a REST API
  • Where it doesn't
    • Not certified for patient care
    • AI model training is not verified
    • May require C++ or plugin development to extend the Workbench
