Our verdict on mIRC

mIRC is a Windows desktop IRC client for public channels and private one-to-one discussions. It is suited to users and teams that already communicate through IRC servers and want a traditional desktop client with multi-server connections, channel moderation, file transfers, notifications, message logging, scripting, and automation. WebSocket connections are also supported. Unlike hosted team-chat services, mIRC connects users to independently operated IRC networks and servers rather than providing its own shared workspace.

Pricing is license-based. The Personal plan costs $19.95 USD per single-user license and includes one year of free updates, with use on up to three computers. The Business/enterprise plan costs $34.95 USD per single-user license annually and adds a floating/shared license plus one year of support, maintenance, and updates. A 30-day evaluation is available, but there is no free plan. The paid structure makes mIRC a straightforward choice for users who specifically need a registered IRC client, while teams seeking subscription-based hosted collaboration may prefer a different type of product.

Its strongest fit is focused IRC communication: channels, private conversations, moderation controls, logging, encryption, and scripting are all represented in the feature set. The trade-off is platform and ecosystem scope. mIRC is Windows-only, is not open source, and functions as client software rather than a hosted team-chat workspace. Choose it if traditional IRC, desktop controls, and server flexibility matter more than cross-platform access or a managed collaboration environment. Choose an alternative if your team needs a hosted workspace or broader platform coverage.
