MindsDB Query Engine review
A free, open-source SQL engine for federation, search, and scheduled data workflows.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
MindsDB Query Engine is a standalone, open-source SQL engine for querying live data across databases, warehouses, applications, and files without ETL. It is aimed at developers, data teams, and AI application builders that need one SQL-oriented layer over heterogeneous sources. Web, API, and self-hosted access support different working styles, while the HTTP-based SQL editor provides a direct interface for queries. The project has been maintained since 2018 and can run locally with Docker or be installed with pip.
Its strongest area is the combination of federation and AI-oriented search. Federated SQL queries can span sources including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Snowflake, BigQuery, and S3, while native queries preserve source-specific syntax when needed. Cross-source views and transformations extend the engine beyond one-off querying. Knowledge bases add vector and metadata search, with hybrid semantic and BM25 keyword search for applications that need both meaning-based retrieval and conventional text matching. Integrations also cover Slack, web crawler inputs, documents, spreadsheets, email, and calendars, giving AI application builders a broad set of possible inputs.
MindsDB Query Engine is a strong fit for technical teams that want open-source control, live federated SQL, compatible database protocols, and scheduled SQL jobs in one project. Scheduled queries and API access make it suitable for repeatable data workflows, while self-hosting supports teams that prefer to operate the engine themselves. Its trade-off is emphasis: governance and caching are less developed than its federation and search capabilities. Teams prioritizing deeper governance or caching should consider an alternative focused on those areas, while developers building AI-enhanced SQL workflows should find the feature mix more relevant.
MindsDB Query Engine pros and cons

- Queries live data across databases, warehouses, apps, and files
- Supports MySQL and PostgreSQL-compatible wire protocols
- Combines semantic search, cross-source views, and scheduled SQL jobs
- Where it doesn't
- Governance depth is less developed than its federation capabilities
- Caching depth is less developed than its query and search features
- Requires technical users comfortable with self-hosting or developer workflows
