Mimecast Secure Email Gateway review
A broad email security gateway for organizations needing layered protection and policy control.

Mimecast Secure Email Gateway is a cloud-based email security service for organizations using Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, on-premises, or hybrid email environments. It inspects inbound, outbound, and internal messages with layered detection, including AI-powered business email compromise protection, malware and spam filtering, URL analysis, attachment sandboxing, impersonation defenses, and data-leak controls. Centralized policy management and granular configurations make it a fit for security teams that need consistent oversight across email flows rather than a narrowly focused phishing filter.
Pricing is organized into three plans, with custom pricing handled through contact with sales. Critical includes AI-powered BEC protection, advanced attachment sandboxing and detection, malware scanning, spam filtering, outbound and internal email scanning, and email continuity. Advanced adds data protection to that foundation, while Premium adds collaboration-tool protection. The plans share the core email inspection and threat-detection capabilities, so the choice centers on continuity, data protection, and collaboration-tool coverage. There is no free plan, and the purchase process is not self-serve.
The product’s ecosystem fit is broad. It supports Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, integrates with CrowdStrike, Netskope, and Palo Alto Networks XSOAR, and provides secure messaging, encryption, backup and recovery, and email continuity capabilities. The published deployment model is cloud-based, with MX-based deployment described for the gateway. Organizations seeking protection across phishing, malware, BEC, impersonation, ransomware, and data loss should consider it when they can support a sales-led buying process and centralized administration. Smaller teams wanting a basic, low-touch email filter or transparent self-service pricing may prefer a simpler alternative.
