Our verdict on MignonSketch

MignonSketch is a natural-media painting and drawing app for iPhone and iPad, with versions for Android and the web. It is aimed at solo artists and small teams who want an offline canvas without creating an account. The app simulates watercolor, oil, pencil, colored pencil, crayon, pastel, ink, gold leaf and airbrush tools, while references and line-art tracing support guided work. Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, azimuth and palm rejection make it particularly suited to iPad and compatible stylus workflows.

The published plans show a Free tier with natural-media painting and drawing tools plus advertising. According to the App Store listing, Remove Ads is a one-time $4.99 purchase; availability and pricing can vary by region. Core creation features include 64 adjustable brushes, 28 paper textures, layers with opacity, clipping and reorder controls, 20 blend modes, color history, palettes, HEX input, canvas resizing, transforms and image filters. The physics-based brush engine models pigment, water, paper texture and oil buildup, giving the app a narrower but deeper focus than a general sketch pad.

For finished pieces and process sharing, MignonSketch records timelapses and exports MP4, alongside PNG, JPEG and native .mgn files. Reference images, tracing resources and lighting scenes add support for study and presentation, while offline operation keeps the core workflow available without an account. Choose it if realistic natural-media behavior, stylus input and offline iPhone or iPad painting matter more than a broad export pipeline. Artists who need additional export formats or prefer an ad-free experience without a separate purchase should consider another drawing app.
