Our verdict on Microsoft Azure AI Foundry

Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, now presented as Microsoft Foundry, is a platform for developing AI applications and agents. It is aimed at developers and organizations that want model access, agent construction, evaluation, and deployment in one environment. Work can happen through the portal, SDKs, APIs, or Visual Studio Code, and the platform covers small, mid-market, and enterprise organizations. Foundry Local also supports running models on a device, alongside cloud deployment options.

The model and agent workflow is a central strength. Developers can compare foundation, open, reasoning, multimodal, and industry-specific models; build prompt agents with the Foundry SDK; or call the Responses API from application code. Hosted agents can be deployed as containers. Evaluation tools inspect end-to-end traces, while optimization features address agent instructions, tool descriptions, and model choice. Agents can also connect to knowledge bases and tools, giving teams several parts of the development cycle within the platform.

Microsoft ecosystem fit is extensive: listed integrations include Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Agent Framework, Azure App Service, Microsoft Fabric, Cosmos DB, and other Azure services.
