Meta Amiga Emulator review
A technically ambitious pre-alpha project for developers evaluating emulation architecture.

Meta Amiga Emulator is an open-source, clean-room project for developers evaluating cycle-accurate Commodore Amiga emulation on macOS, Linux, and Windows. Its planned scope covers Amiga games, Workbench, and demoscene software across OCS, ECS, and AGA systems, including models from the A1000 through A4000 plus CDTV and CD32. The project is currently pre-alpha, so it is better suited to technical evaluation than everyday Amiga use.
Its strongest technical focus is the emulation architecture. The design uses a shared colour-clock timeline for cycle-accurate behavior and aims for deterministic execution, with replay and state snapshots planned. Compatibility measurement is built around automated framebuffer and audio hashes, giving developers a defined way to compare behavior. The documented media scope is broad, covering ADF, Extended ADF, ADZ, DMS, SCP, KryoFlux raw, IPF/CAPS, HDF, ISO/CUE/CHD, and related CD images. Kickstart ROM loading is planned, including licensed Amiga Forever encrypted ROM handling, while an AROS fallback is intended for operation without a Kickstart ROM.
The main limitation is maturity: the project documentation and build workflow exist, but there is no emulator available to run yet. Building is aimed at a CMake, Ninja, and C++23 environment, which fits developers comfortable with source-based projects rather than users seeking a ready-made application. The GPL-3.0-or-later license supports examination and modification, but the current status makes practical compatibility, replay, and snapshot capabilities future-facing. Developers interested in architecture, deterministic testing, and broad media targets should watch Meta Amiga Emulator; users who need a working emulator today should choose a currently available alternative.
