Our verdict on Medly
Medly is a touch-focused music-making and audio-editing app for iPhone and iPad. It targets beginners, experienced producers, and teachers who want to build songs from sections containing notes, audio samples, and loops. Touch controls support adding and modifying notes, while audio can be recorded or imported and trimmed. Projects can be shared as video, audio, MIDI, or Medly files, keeping the workflow centered on mobile composition.
The freemium structure provides a free Starter Pack with 17 instruments and more than 100 loops and samples. A seven-day Medly Member trial is available, followed by monthly or yearly Member plans that unlock the Medly Member sound library and exclusive features. The free tier gives prospective users a way to explore section-based arranging, clip editing, automation, and effects before deciding whether the expanded library and added features fit their work.
Medly’s editing depth is strongest in touch-based arrangement: users can automate volume, echo, and other effects, apply audio effects, and create point-based fades and pitch bends. MIDI support extends the app beyond audio clips, and exports include several formats for sharing or continued work. SoundCloud upload, Inter-App Audio, and Ableton Link provide connections to a small music-production ecosystem. Because it runs on iOS and emphasizes composition, it suits solo creators and small teams working on mobile devices; users seeking a broader desktop editing environment or a general-purpose audio editor should consider alternatives.
