MediaSage review
A Plex-focused, open-source playlist builder with natural-language prompts and provider choice.

MediaSage is an open-source, self-hosted web application for creating music playlists and album recommendations from a Plex library. It is aimed at people who maintain their own music collections and want AI-assisted discovery without moving their library to another service. Natural-language prompts can include mood, era, instrumentation, genre, production style, and a seed track. Results can be explored from a starting track or narrowed with genre, decade, rating, and live-recording filters.
Its strongest fit is the combination of library awareness and playlist control. MediaSage maintains a local SQLite library cache, then lets users preview generated playlists, remove tracks, and save the result to Plex. Playlists can be created, replaced, or appended, and playback is available on active Plex clients. Album recommendations support both library and discovery modes, giving the product a wider role than a simple prompt-to-playlist tool while keeping Plex as the central playback environment.
The AI layer supports Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, Ollama, and custom OpenAI-compatible APIs. That range accommodates hosted providers as well as local or compatible endpoints, while making provider configuration part of the deployment. The MIT license and self-hosted model suit users who value open-source software and control over where the application runs. MediaSage should appeal to Plex music owners who want prompt-driven exploration and editable playlists. It is less suitable for listeners seeking a standalone service with broad streaming-platform support or a hosted setup that avoids self-hosting.
