MCP Memory Service review
A broad open-source memory layer for teams that can manage deployment and configuration.

MCP Memory Service is an open-source persistent memory layer from doobidoo for AI agents and coding assistants. It stores memories in local or synchronized backends, retrieves them through semantic and hybrid search, and links them in a typed knowledge graph. The feature set covers semantic, episodic, user-profile and graph memory, with configurable retention. It fits solo developers through enterprise teams that want control over memory storage and access rather than a narrowly scoped memory API.
The project is free and Apache-2.0 licensed. It can run in the cloud or self-hosted, on web, Windows, macOS and Linux, with API access available. Any infrastructure expenses, such as a VPS, are separate from the software. Local ONNX embeddings keep embedding calls on the local system, while optional synchronized backends support remote arrangements. Remote MCP access supports OAuth 2.0/2.1, and the service also provides a web dashboard and REST API. Teams should expect to make deployment and authentication choices rather than treating it as a single fixed installation.
Its ecosystem coverage is a major strength: integrations include LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, VS Code, Windsurf and ChatGPT in Developer Mode. MCP access works over local stdio or remote HTTP, and multi-agent tagging enables shared memory synchronization. Automatic consolidation, decay, compression and pruning address long-lived memory maintenance. The trade-off is breadth: configuring several protocols, backends and agent connections can demand more technical ownership than a focused hosted tool. Choose MCP Memory Service when extensibility, open source and self-managed control matter; consider an alternative if you want vendor-operated infrastructure with minimal configuration.
MCP Memory Service pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Semantic, hybrid BM25-plus-vector search with typed graph links
- Automatic consolidation, decay, compression and pruning
- MCP, REST, OAuth and local ONNX embedding support
- Where it doesn't
- Infrastructure costs such as a VPS are separate from the software
- Configuration spans local, remote, REST, OAuth and CLI interfaces
- Support is provided through documentation rather than listed service channels
