MatterX is a legal practice management and trust-accounting platform for Australian and New Zealand law firms. It runs on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and combines trust operations with matter management, billing, financial reporting and document management. Its trust feature set covers client ledgers with segregation, three-way reconciliation between the trust ledger, cash book and bank statement, statutory deposits, controlled money, trust transfers, audit trails, dual payment authorisation and external examiner and Law Society reporting. It is most relevant to firms that want legal finance within a Microsoft-oriented environment.

The plan structure needs careful reading. Good Minutes is a free desktop time tracker with automatic activity capture, up to 5 matters, 6-minute billing increments and privacy controls; it is not the full trust-accounting platform. Base adds MatterX Legal Finance, NSW Law Society-certified trust accounting, unlimited matters and clients, SharePoint document management, Microsoft 365 integration and Power BI analytics. Professional adds Frontdesk, Contra, Fresh Press, advanced AI agents and priority support. Premium adds MatterX SharePoint, Dot to Dot, Word Up, managed services, custom integrations and a dedicated account manager. The paid tiers are quote-based, so selection depends on the required MatterX components and service level.

Its strongest fit is for firms already invested in Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Power BI, Power Automate, Microsoft Copilot or Microsoft Entra ID. Additional integrations include Microsoft Dataverse, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Xero. Those connections support a broader practice-management and reporting environment rather than a narrow trust ledger. Firms seeking full trust accounting without moving beyond the free Good Minutes tracker should look elsewhere; firms wanting a Microsoft-connected platform with compliance controls should consider Base or a higher tier.

MatterX pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Three-way reconciliation with audit trails and dual authorisation
    • Broad Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Power Platform and Xero integrations
    • Trust reporting covers statutory deposits, controlled money and examiners
  • Where it doesn't
    • The free Good Minutes plan is a desktop time tracker, not full trust accounting
    • Paid Base, Professional and Premium plans are quote-based
    • Advanced capabilities are spread across higher-tier MatterX products
