Our verdict on Matra
Matra is a Hindi literacy app for heritage speakers who already speak or understand Hindi but have not learned Devanagari. Its focus is learning to read and write Hindi script, rather than starting Hindi from zero. Free interactive lessons cover characters, matras and sight words, with writing practice and character tracing. That makes it a fit for learners whose priority is script literacy on an iPhone or iPad, not for someone looking for a general-purpose course centered on spoken Hindi.
The learning material extends beyond character drills. Reading content includes stories, songs and chats, while phrase practice is organized around people in the learner’s life. Progress levels and quizzes provide a way to revisit and check lesson material, and Bollywood media brings cultural content into the experience. Friends and group leaderboards add a social element. Together, these features keep the emphasis on reading, writing and cultural familiarity; they do not make Matra a speaking-practice app.
Matra is iOS-only, so learners on other platforms should look elsewhere. Its beginner course level is aimed at people with an existing spoken foundation, which may make it a poor fit for someone learning Hindi from scratch. Lessons remain free; optional in-app purchases are described as cosmetic or support items and do not unlock lessons. Choose Matra if free Hindi script and reading practice on iOS matches your goal. If you need speaking practice, a course for complete beginners, or access beyond iOS, another app is a better match.
