MATLAB Classification Learner is an app for exploring supervised machine learning and training classifiers from labeled data. It is aimed at MATLAB users who want to compare classification approaches, examine predictor contributions, and carry trained models into MATLAB workflows. Its scope is supervised classification rather than a general platform for the full machine-learning lifecycle, so teams looking for broader model types or lifecycle tooling may prefer another approach.

The app automates training across decision trees, discriminant analysis, support vector machines, logistic regression, nearest neighbors, naive Bayes, kernel approximation, ensembles, and neural networks. Users can select or remove predictors, rank features, choose cross-validation or holdout validation, tune hyperparameters, and compare metrics with visualized results. Global and local interpretability options include partial dependence, LIME, and Shapley values. This breadth makes it useful for comparing candidate classifiers within one workflow, though it remains centered on classification rather than broader ML tasks.

Workflow fit is strongest for organizations already working in MATLAB: trained models can be exported to the MATLAB workspace, Simulink, or MATLAB Production Server, and MATLAB code can be generated to recreate them. Experiment Manager is also listed as an integration. The app requires both MATLAB and Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox licenses; it is not offered as a separate product or free plan. According to the vendor's pricing notes, annual license pricing varies by license type and region. Choose it if classifier exploration and handoff into MATLAB are central to your work; look elsewhere if you need a standalone low-code platform spanning a wider ML lifecycle or do not plan to license MATLAB and its required toolbox.

MATLAB Classification Learner pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Automates training across a broad range of classifier types
    • Compares model metrics with validation and hyperparameter tuning
    • Exports models or generates MATLAB code for reuse
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires MATLAB and Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox licenses
    • Focused on supervised classification, not a full ML lifecycle
    • No free plan
