Mason.nvim review
A focused Neovim tool manager for installing and maintaining language tooling.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Mason.nvim brings external development tools under one Neovim interface. It installs and manages language server protocol servers, debug adapter protocol servers, linters, and formatters, with a graphical package status window for viewing their state. It is aimed at people who work in Neovim and want those language tools managed alongside their editor configuration, rather than people looking for a general-purpose plugin manager. Mason requires Neovim 0.10.0 or later and runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Its main distinction is the shared handling of tools that otherwise serve different parts of an editing workflow. Mason can install, reinstall, update, and uninstall managed packages, as well as download and update package registries. Packages go in Neovim's data directory by default; their executables are linked into a shared bin directory, which Mason adds to Neovim's PATH during setup. Package registries can be configured, and concurrent installations can be limited. Optional Socket Firewall support applies to supported package sources. This makes Mason a fit for users who want these tool-management tasks consolidated in Neovim.
The scope is deliberately narrower than the Plugins & Extensions category might suggest: Mason manages external language tools, not general editor plugins. It is open source and free, but the published feature set does not include version rollback or automatic updates. Choose it if you use Neovim and need a central way to manage language servers, debuggers, linters, or formatters. If your priority is managing editor plugins themselves, Mason is not aimed at that job.
