Map Atlases is an open-source Minecraft Java Edition mod for players who want navigation built around vanilla map items. It stores maps in an Atlas, renders an HUD minimap while the Atlas is active, and provides a zoomable, pannable view of the mapped world. Explorers can track explored dimensions, expand or remove stored maps, clone them, merge them, and use banners or map decorations as markers. The published support covers Fabric and NeoForge, with versions listed from 1.18 through 1.21.1.

Its standout strength is the Atlas-based mapping workflow. Instead of treating the minimap and world map as separate surfaces, Map Atlases connects them to map storage and map management. Cross-dimension tracking extends that approach beyond a single area, while configurable map and Atlas behavior gives players control over how the system works. Optional waypoint pins through Moonlight Lib, entity radar for nearby mobs, and slice-based cave and Nether mapping add more specialized tools without changing the mod's central focus on maps.

The main consideration is its dependency and integration structure. Fabric API and Cloth Config support the core environment, while Moonlight Lib, Supplementaries, Curios, Twilight Forest, Xaero Minimap, and Trinkets provide additional compatibility or functionality. Waypoints, entity radar, and cave mapping are optional rather than universal base features, so the feature set depends on the selected setup. Map Atlases suits map-heavy explorers who want a vanilla-style system with detailed Atlas management; players seeking a minimal minimap without map handling or optional integrations may prefer a narrower tool.

Map Atlases pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Combines an HUD minimap with a zoomable, pannable world map
    • Tracks maps across dimensions and supports merging, cloning, and expansion
    • Supports Fabric and NeoForge with optional radar, waypoints, and cave mapping
  • Where it doesn't
    • Optional waypoints, entity radar, and cave mapping need integrations
    • The original project targets Fabric only
    • Java Edition support covers specified Minecraft versions rather than every release
