MailStack is an open-source, self-hosted shared inbox for organizations that manage their own email infrastructure and need controlled browser access to incoming mail. Administrators manage users and mailbox memberships, with per-user authorization for shared mailboxes. It is designed for receive-only business email, so teams looking for a hosted service or a tool that also handles outbound email should look elsewhere.

The deployment is built around Postfix and Dovecot LMTP for mail delivery, with MariaDB, Nginx, Gunicorn, and systemd among its listed integrations. The reference setup targets Ubuntu Server 24.04 and offers one-click VPS installation. That makes MailStack a fit for teams comfortable operating a server and its supporting services; it is less suitable for groups that want a managed inbox without infrastructure responsibilities. Its standalone mail-platform fit keeps the focus on mailboxes the organization manages itself.

For day-to-day reading, MailStack includes message search, pagination, read/unread state, attachment filters, and sanitized HTML and plain-text rendering. Attachment downloads use authorization checks, while browser notifications surface newly indexed messages. Operational audit logging, health monitoring, and backup, restore, rollback, and verification tooling address administration and continuity. The receive-only scope is also a meaningful boundary: collaboration features such as comments, assignment, and collision detection are not verified. Choose MailStack for self-hosted, access-controlled inbound mail; choose another shared inbox if your workflow depends on coordinated replies or built-in collaboration.
