Our verdict on M-Star CFD
M-Star CFD is a computational fluid dynamics package for engineers, scientists, and researchers modeling interacting physical processes. Its workflow spans graphical preprocessing, a solver, and post-processing, with applications including bioreactors, agitated tanks, particle-laden systems, and free-surface dynamics. Windows and Linux support, plus desktop and self-hosted deployment, make it a fit for teams that manage their own computing resources and need more than single-phase flow analysis.
The software's scope is a central strength: it can simulate fluid flow alongside heat transfer, chemical reactions, and particle dynamics, and model Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. It also supports free surfaces and six-degree-of-freedom rigid-body mechanics. CAD import, surface mesh generation, and graphical parameter setup connect geometry preparation to simulation, while rendering, plots, snapshots, and animations support review of output. The Python API automates preprocessing, which is relevant for teams that repeat model setup. These capabilities suit coupled-process work; teams needing only a narrow flow-analysis workflow may find the breadth unnecessary.
M-Star CFD is sold through a contact-sales pricing model, and there is no time-unlimited free plan. A free trial is available by request. Because the software runs on user-managed desktop and server resources, buyers should account for their own deployment and compute environment when assessing fit. It supports Windows 10 and 11, Windows Server 2016+, and listed Redhat, Ubuntu, and Debian versions. Choose it when multiphysics coverage, CAD-based setup, and preprocessing automation align with the work; teams seeking an always-free option or pricing they can assess without contacting sales should consider alternatives.
