  • Where it wins

    • Analyzes Nginx, Apache, custom, compressed, and rotated logs
    • Combines crawler, crawl-budget, session, traffic, and security analysis
    • Runs offline in a browser with filtering, request inspection, and CSV export
  • Where it doesn't

    • Log analysis uses uploaded files rather than a connected ingestion pipeline
    • Browser-based operation may not suit teams wanting centralized server processing
    • Its broad feature set may exceed the needs of simple traffic reporting

Our verdict on LogWerk

LogWerk is an open-source, offline-first server log analyzer for developers, sysadmins, and site operators. It runs in a web browser and lets teams upload Nginx or Apache access logs, including Gzip-compressed and rotated files. The product covers traffic, HTTP statuses, paths, referrers, sessions, security patterns, and crawler activity, making it a fit for teams that want local analysis without a backend or database. Its self-hosted positioning also suits organizations that prefer to keep log review within their own environment.

Its standout strength is the breadth of SEO and crawler intelligence in one workflow. LogWerk classifies more than 70 crawler types by provider and purpose, including AI and search-engine bots, then adds crawl-budget and bot-error reporting. Session timelines reconstructed from IP addresses and user agents provide a visitor-path view, while suspicious-IP reporting, security-pattern detection, and offline Geo-IP indicators extend the analysis beyond search crawling. Filtering and detailed request inspection help move from a high-level report to individual requests, and CSV export supports further analysis.

The trade-off is its file-based, browser-centered operating model. Logs are uploaded for analysis rather than processed through a connected ingestion pipeline, and the product is designed for offline use without a backend or database. That makes LogWerk a strong choice for self-hosted teams seeking broad crawler, traffic, session, and security visibility from local files. Teams that need centralized, continuously connected log processing should consider a different type of platform.
