Our verdict on LMMS

LMMS is a free, open-source digital audio workstation for composing, sequencing, synthesizing, arranging, mixing, and exporting music. Its workflow suits musicians and home-studio users focused on instrumental tracks, especially those who prefer pattern-based MIDI composition without a paid license. The software runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with a Song Editor for arranging tracks and clips, a Beat+Bassline Editor for repeating rhythmic patterns, and a Piano Roll for notes, chords, scales, timing, velocity, and panning.

LMMS’s ecosystem is centered on MIDI and virtual instruments rather than recorded audio. MIDI input and controller support connect external control hardware, while VST instrument and effect support extends the built-in synthesizers, samplers, and effects. SoundFont support adds another sound source, and MIDI and Hydrogen project import can support workflows that already use those formats. The Automation Editor provides time-based parameter control, making the application suitable for arrangements that depend on programmed changes across a song.

The main trade-off is its narrow fit for pattern-led composition. VST3 plug-ins are not supported, and audio recording and audio warping are absent, so users who need a recording-first workflow, modern VST3 compatibility, or detailed audio time manipulation should choose another DAW. LMMS is a strong match for composers building MIDI-driven music with built-in instruments, samples, automation, and external plug-ins on a free, cross-platform foundation. It is less suitable for musicians whose work depends on capturing live audio or editing recorded performances.
