Llama Guard is a family of open-source safety-classification models from Meta for developers building generative-AI applications. It classifies LLM input prompts and generated responses as safe or unsafe, then reports the safety or hazard categories involved. The models are suited to teams that want developer-controlled deployment through downloadable weights, with support for input filtering, output filtering, or both. Llama Guard 4 extends the family with text-and-image classification, including multiple images in a prompt, while supported versions provide multilingual text safety classification.

Deployment flexibility is a central part of the product. Llama Guard can run in self-hosted environments and is also integrated with the Llama Moderations API for text and image moderation. That gives development teams a choice between deploying the downloadable model family in their own environment and connecting through Meta’s moderation API. The documented feature set also includes custom policies, alongside hazard-category reporting and separate input and output filtering modes.

Its focus is narrower than a full moderation operations suite. Llama Guard is designed around automated classification of LLM prompts and responses, with text-and-image coverage rather than a broader workflow spanning audio, video, or human review. It is also a model family rather than a conventional hosted SaaS product, so it fits teams prepared to manage developer-controlled deployment. Choose Llama Guard for self-hosted LLM safety classification and multimodal prompt filtering; choose an alternative when the primary need is broader moderation operations beyond text and images.
