Our verdict on Lightning Assist
Lightning Assist is a native desktop text-expansion application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It lets users create reusable snippets triggered by abbreviations or configurable hotkeys, then expand them in email, documents, chats, code editors, terminals, and other desktop software. AI commands support rewriting, enhancing, translating, summarizing, and generating text, while push-to-talk voice typing adds another input method. It fits individuals and teams that want reusable text workflows across multiple desktop platforms.
The published plans provide a clear free-to-paid progression. Free includes up to 20 snippets, unlimited text expansion, one team, and AI features that use credits. Pro costs $5.99 per user per month and adds unlimited snippets, suggestions as you type, Lightning Recall, up to 15 teams, 1,000 AI Credits monthly, and 1,000 Speech Credits monthly. The Company plan includes everything in Pro, plus managed accounts, custom onboarding, administrative controls, and chat and Zoom support. A 14-day free trial is also available. AI features consume credits, so frequent AI or speech use should be considered alongside the subscription.
Its platform and ecosystem fit are notable for a text-expansion tool. Lightning Assist integrates with Gmail, Slack, Zendesk, Outlook, Microsoft Word, Notion, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, PowerShell, Bash, and CMD. Imports from TextExpander, Espanso, Text Blaze, CSV, and JSON can help teams bring existing snippet libraries into the application, while cross-device synchronization keeps snippets available across supported computers. Shared libraries, folders, a Quick Access window, and Lightning Recall extend its organizational depth. Choose it for cross-platform desktop work, AI-assisted writing, and shared snippets; choose an alternative if mobile access or unrestricted AI usage is central.
