Our verdict on LibreTexts

LibreTexts is a nonprofit open educational resource platform for students, educators, and institutions. Its core offering combines free digital textbook libraries with tools for creating, remixing, publishing, and sharing instructional content. Textbooks can be read online, downloaded as PDFs, printed, or embedded into institutional learning environments. It suits programs that want open course materials while retaining control over customization and delivery.

Pricing separates the free textbook library from paid ancillary services. ADAPT, The Forge, and Jupyter Hub each cost $15 USD per student per 6 months. ADAPT adds homework, formative assessment, threaded audio/visual discussion, Learning Trees, graded H5P, and organic structure grading. The Forge provides student writing, word processing, slide deck authoring, spreadsheets, and writing-process analytics. Jupyter Hub supports collaborative notebooks for data science and computer science courses. All-Access costs $30 USD per student per 6 months and includes unlimited student access to those three tools. LibreNet Consortium costs $2,500 USD per institution per year and adds unlimited custom textbooks, early access to new technologies, a branded Campus Commons page, and two LibreTexts Academy training seats.

The platform’s breadth is its defining strength: interactive textbooks can include videos, Jupyter notebooks, visualizations, and assessment questions, while Hypothesis supports highlights, notes, and annotations. LMS import uses LTI Common Cartridge, and the ecosystem includes Google Workspace, Microsoft Active Directory, YouTube, PhET, BeeLine Reader, and learning management systems. Programs seeking a focused open-textbook foundation should find the mix of free access, customization, offline PDFs, and institutional options useful. Organizations prioritizing a native app experience or a narrower, simpler reading tool should consider a more tightly focused alternative.
