LibrePlan is an open-source, web-based project management application for project managers and organizations planning, monitoring, and controlling projects. It is particularly suited to PMOs that need structured resource planning across multiple projects, with work breakdown structures, interactive Gantt charts, dependencies, milestones, resource allocation, workload analysis, progress reporting, cost control, and timesheets. The Community Edition is self-hosted and has no license fee, while the Enterprise Edition adds hosted or on-premise deployment, guaranteed support, and service-level agreements.

The planning depth is its clearest strength. Teams can allocate resources specifically or by criteria, manage resource calendars and skills, inspect workloads and capacity, and compare project activity through multi-project dashboards and indicators. Monte Carlo project-duration simulation adds a forecasting angle, while earned value analysis, reports, progress measurement, and expense tracking support control after the initial plan is created. These features make LibrePlan more suitable for structured PMO work than for lightweight task lists or simple team coordination.

Deployment and ecosystem fit deserve closer consideration. Community users take on the responsibility of running a self-hosted web application, whereas Enterprise users can choose hosted or on-premise deployment with support and SLA agreements. Project data can be imported and exported through web services, giving organizations a defined extension point, but the product's published capabilities are centered on planning, resource control, reporting, and time tracking rather than a broad connected-app workflow. Choose LibrePlan when open-source ownership, self-hosting, and capacity analysis matter most; choose another tool when low-maintenance collaboration or a wider integration layer is the priority.
