Libre Kambio is an open-source currency-conversion application for Linux desktops. It suits solo users and small teams that want to compare several currencies in one view while retaining visibility into how rates are published. The interface supports English and Spanish, and the application is distributed as a Flatpak for desktop installation.

Its standout capability is simultaneous conversion across every visible currency. Rate coverage combines European Central Bank references, Bank of Russia rates, official USD pegs for selected currencies and optional Latin American central-bank sources. Users can set a base currency, create custom groups, reorder entries and hide currencies that are not relevant to their work. Each rate can be examined with its publication date, status and an independent cross-check display, giving financially careful users more context than a single opaque quote. When a request fails, Libre Kambio falls back to the last successfully stored rates, supporting continued use when connectivity is interrupted.

The trade-off is focus. Libre Kambio is a desktop-only Linux tool rather than a cross-platform or web service, so teams working across Windows, macOS or mobile devices will need another option. Its published feature set does not describe historical-rate charts, alerts or a configurable refresh interval, which limits monitoring and notification workflows. Choose it when transparent central-bank references, custom currency organization and offline fallback matter more than broad platform coverage or analytical history. Users needing shared cloud access, automated alerts or chart-based trend review should look for a converter built around those capabilities instead.

Libre Kambio pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Converts one amount across all visible currencies at once
    • Combines ECB, Bank of Russia, USD-peg and Latin American rates
    • Custom groups, ordering, visibility and rate-status checks
  • Where it doesn't
    • Runs on Linux desktops only
    • No stated historical-rate charts, alerts or refresh interval
    • Flatpak distribution may not fit every Linux deployment
