Our verdict on Lexical
Lexical is an open-source JavaScript framework for building text-editing experiences in web applications. It is aimed at development teams creating plain-text editors, rich-text editors, CMS interfaces, messaging inputs, and collaborative editing features. Its core attaches to contenteditable elements and provides APIs for editor state, commands, nodes, serialization, and DOM reconciliation. Teams can extend the editor with packages for formatting, headings, lists, links, tables, Markdown, HTML, history, and collaboration. The framework-agnostic core and official React bindings make it particularly suitable for React teams that want control over the editor experience rather than a hosted, ready-made product.
The strongest functional advantage is its structured editing foundation. Editor state is immutable and serializable as JSON, while HTML and Markdown import and export support content portability. Tables include headers, cell selection, navigation, and copy/paste, giving teams more than basic rich-text formatting. Real-time collaboration is available through Yjs bindings, and accessibility support is designed around WCAG practices. File import and export, headings, blockquotes, and React plugins broaden the range of content workflows without changing the product's developer-focused model.
Lexical's trade-off is the amount of product work left to the implementing team. It is a framework rather than a hosted SaaS product, so teams must assemble the interface, feature set, and application integration around its core. React is the clearest fit through its bindings and plugins, while the overall platform coverage remains focused on the web. Choose Lexical when extensibility, structured state, collaboration, and control over the editor architecture matter most. Teams seeking a packaged editor experience with broad platform coverage or a conventional hosted deployment model should consider an alternative.
