Our verdict on LeoCAD
LeoCAD is an open-source desktop CAD application for creating virtual LEGO models. It is aimed at hobbyists, educators, and designers who want to assemble brick-based models, organize them into submodels and building steps, create alternate views, and produce instructions or rendered images. The interface supports part search, movement, rotation, snapping, and color selection, making it suited to structured virtual construction rather than broad 3D asset creation.
The free and open-source model keeps access straightforward across Windows, Linux, and macOS, under the GPLv2 license. Its strongest ecosystem connection is compatibility with the LDraw Standard, including LDR and MPD files and an LDraw-compatible parts library. Export options include OBJ, 3DS, and COLLADA, while HTML instruction generation and CSV parts export help turn models into shareable documentation and parts lists.
LeoCAD's standout strength is the combination of model building and presentation tools. Timeline editing supports multi-step instructions, while keyframe-based animation can control pieces and cameras. Multiple simultaneous views, image generation, and rendering controls add useful depth for documenting a model. The trade-off is its narrow focus: users seeking general-purpose sculpting, surface modeling, or a wider 3D production workflow should consider a different application. LeoCAD is a strong fit for virtual LEGO projects and instructional material, but less suitable for work beyond brick-based design.
