Our verdict on Learning with Texts

Learning with Texts (LWT) is a free, open-source language-learning web application built around reading. It is intended primarily for individual learners who want to study their own materials rather than follow a fixed course. Learners can define study languages, import texts, and have them split into sentences and words. The app supports optional MP3 playback, saved translations and romanization, external dictionary lookups, contextual vocabulary testing, progress statistics, and annotated texts for online or offline learning. It runs in a modern browser on web, Windows, macOS, Linux, or a self-hosted setup.

Its strongest fit is reading-based vocabulary development. Learners can save unfamiliar words and multi-word expressions while reading, review terms in sentence context, and use Massive-Context Cloze Deletion testing. This keeps review tied to the text where vocabulary appeared instead of separating study from reading material. Integrations with Anki, external dictionaries, and Google Translate extend the workflow, while exports to Anki, TSV, and other formats support learners who want to continue their vocabulary work elsewhere. These features make LWT particularly suitable for people bringing their own articles, books, transcripts, or other study texts.

The trade-off is a narrower learning scope. LWT supports reading, vocabulary review, audio playback, statistics, and offline annotated texts, but it does not provide mobile apps or speech practice. Self-hosting also involves a local web and database server such as XAMPP, MAMP, or LAMP, which adds setup work compared with a hosted app. Choose LWT if authentic reading and control over study materials matter most; choose an alternative if you need a mobile-first experience, structured lessons, or dedicated speaking practice.
