LanScan is a macOS desktop app for discovering active devices on a local network or configured subnet. It suits solo users and small teams who want a basic inventory of devices and their network identifiers, rather than an assessment of Wi-Fi security. Scans use ARP on local networks; configured public IP ranges can also be scanned using ping, SMB, and mDNS. That makes the app a focused network discovery tool, not a vulnerability scanner.

Its inventory view brings together IP and MAC addresses, associated vendors, and hostnames resolved through DNS, mDNS, and SMB. LanScan automatically detects Airport, Ethernet, and virtual interfaces, and lets users add custom hostnames and comments. Scan results can be exported to CSV for reference elsewhere. These capabilities are useful when the goal is to identify devices on a network, but the documented feature set does not include security checks or alerts when the network changes.

LanScan is offered as a free download with in-app purchases. The Free plan supports device discovery, though some results may be obfuscated. Paid listings include Pro purchase options for v6, IPv4, and IPv6, as well as v8 NDI purchases with one-week, one-month, three-month, and six-month durations. According to the vendor's pricing page, the Pro price is $5.99; the US App Store lists the v6 purchase at $9.99, and App Store prices may vary by region. Choose LanScan for a lightweight Mac inventory and CSV export; choose another tool if security assessments or ongoing monitoring are central requirements.

LanScan pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Finds active devices across local networks and configured subnets
    • Shows IP and MAC addresses, vendors, and resolved hostnames
    • Exports scan results to CSV and supports custom device notes
  • Where it doesn't
    • Does not perform documented Wi-Fi security checks
    • Does not provide monitoring alerts for network changes
    • Free results may be obfuscated; the app is limited to macOS
